Safari Highlight
Begin your day with breakfast, and by 7am our experienced tour guide will meet you at your location in Entebbe or Kampala, brief you about this 1 day tour and transfer you to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The drive takes about 2 to 3 hours along the Kampala-Gulu Highway through Luweero town and when you reach Nakasongola district, follow the turn from Nakitoma Trading Centre and drive a distance of 7km before reaching the Sanctuary.
Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed and briefed by the rangers and after start trekking of these amazing White Rhinos. During the trek, you will see many bird species and other wildlife species such as antelopes. Tracking rhinos takes about 2 – 3 hours and how long it lasts is based on their location.
After tracking, meet tour guide and have lunch, take off a few minutes to relax and thereafter start the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe.
The sanctuary is found in the Northwestern part of Uganda and takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to drive from Kampala. Most travellers use a Safari vehicle with a popup roof to get to Ziwa. When the journey starts from Kampala or Entebbe it takes you through Luweero District and then to Nakasongola District where the Sanctuary is located.
Tracking rhinos in Ziwa is done all year round, all seasons are favorable. It could either be in the morning or evening hours.
Tracking rhinos in Ziwa gives you chance to see the white rhinos which are part of the African Big 5 game. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is found in Nakasongola district north of Kampala and covers an area of 70km2, it hosts around 33 southern white rhinos, over 300 species of birds, plant species and other wildlife species such as monkey, Waterbucks, reedbucks, bushbucks as well as various reptile species.
Way back in the 90’s, Uganda had big numbers of Rhinos but due to the wars and massive killings that took place that time, many rhinos died hence this resulted into the extinction of rhinos in Uganda. However, in 2005, the Rhino Fund Uganda re-introduced Rhinos through establishing this sanctuary to preserve and conserve this endangered species. The sanctuary is safe and secure for the rhinos and employs over 70 well trained rangers who work well to ensure that the rhinos and other species are protected.
