Arrival in Entebbe and Transfer to Ssese Islands

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you'll be greeted by your friendly and knowledgeable guide. After a brief introduction, you'll be transferred to the stunning Ssese Islands, a lush archipelago located in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria. The journey includes a short drive to the Nakiwogo dock, followed by a picturesque boat ride across the lake's serene waters.

Once you arrive on the main island of Bugala, you'll check into your comfortable lodge, nestled amidst the island's tropical landscapes. Take some time to unwind and soak up the tranquil atmosphere before embarking on a guided nature walk. Your expert guide will introduce you to the island's diverse flora and fauna, including a variety of colorful birds and playful monkeys.

In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner featuring locally-caught fish and fresh produce, as you watch the sun set over the shimmering waters of Lake Victoria.

  2. Day 2

    Exploration of Bugala Island

After a leisurely breakfast, set off on a full-day exploration of Bugala Island, the largest of the Ssese Islands. Begin with a visit to a local fishing village, where you'll learn about the traditional fishing techniques used by the islanders and interact with friendly locals. Observe the colorful fishing boats and the daily catch, and perhaps even try your hand at fishing using traditional methods.

Next, embark on a guided hike through the island's lush forests, home to a wide variety of wildlife, including vervet monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and numerous species of birds. Your guide will share fascinating insights into the island's unique ecosystem and the importance of conservation efforts in the region.

After a picnic lunch amidst the beautiful surroundings, visit a local community to learn about their traditional way of life. Participate in a cooking demonstration, preparing authentic Ugandan dishes using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Engage with community members and gain a deeper understanding of their culture and customs.

Return to your lodge in the late afternoon, where you can relax by the pool, enjoy a sunset yoga session, or simply unwind with a good book and the soothing sounds of the island's natural surroundings.

  3. Day 3

    Island-Hopping Adventure

Today, embark on an exciting island-hopping adventure, exploring some of the 84 islands that make up the Ssese archipelago. Board a traditional canoe or motorboat and set off across the calm waters of Lake Victoria, taking in the breathtaking scenery and the fresh breeze.

Your first stop is the nearby island of Banda, known for its pristine sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. Take a refreshing swim, snorkel in the shallow waters to discover the colorful aquatic life, or simply relax on the shore, soaking up the sun and the serene atmosphere.

Continue your journey to the smaller, uninhabited islands, where you'll have the opportunity to spot a variety of water birds, including the majestic African fish eagle and the vibrant kingfishers. Enjoy a picnic lunch on one of the secluded beaches, surrounded by the natural beauty of the islands.

In the afternoon, visit a local community on one of the inhabited islands to learn about their unique way of life and the challenges they face living in such a remote location. Engage with friendly locals and gain insight into their daily routines and cultural traditions.

Return to your lodge on Bugala Island in the evening, where you'll enjoy a delicious dinner and reflect on the day's incredible experiences.

Check into your comfortable hotel and take some time to freshen up before setting off on a guided city tour. Visit the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, a serene oasis that is home to a wide variety of plant species and a haven for birdwatchers. Take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, admiring the lush vegetation and keeping an eye out for the many species of birds that call the gardens home.

Next, visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, a renowned zoo and conservation facility that provides a sanctuary for rescued and endangered animals. Observe chimpanzees, lions, giraffes, and many other species in spacious, natural enclosures, and learn about the center's efforts to promote wildlife conservation and education.

What you can check

Why travel with Tranquil Safaris?

116 itineraries are published on this site, across 12 destinations; 49 of them run through Uganda, where the company is based and licensed. Any one of them can be read in full — the route, the parks, the nights — before you speak to anybody. What follows is the case for using us, and not one line of it asks you to take our word for it.

  1. The whole trip is written down first

Every trip of four days or more is set out one day at a time: where the day goes, what happens in it, where the night is spent. The one-, two- and three-day trips are written up in full as prose instead. Nothing is held back until you enquire.

    Read the itineraries
  2. A park is named only when a day is spent in it

A trip is listed against a park because its itinerary genuinely spends time there, never because the name turns up in the write-up. 40 parks and reserves are covered on that rule, and each one lists the trips that actually go.

    Browse parks and reserves
  3. Small groups, or the vehicle to yourself

Groups are kept small — typically four to twelve guests — and a private departure can be arranged instead.

  4. A planner answers, not a checkout

There is no basket on this site, no price list and no booking engine. Shortlist what interests you in the trip planner, or write from the contact page: the message reaches the people who plan the routes.
