Uganda’s Beaches and Safari

No, Uganda isn’t a coastal country. But don’t let that fool you. This African nation has some of the best beaches and safaris in the world. From the shores of Lake Victoria to the banks of the Nile, Uganda is stunning in every way.

Ssese Islands – Tropical Escape

Imagine this: white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and palm trees swaying in the breeze. No need to go to Fiji or Hawaii — Ssese Islands has it all. About 80 kilometers northwest of Kampala lies an archipelago with 84 islands that will make you feel like you’re in paradise.

Start hopping from island to island at Buggala Island. It’s the largest one out of all Ssese Islands and it’s packed with things to do. You can swim at Mutumbula and Luku beaches, hike through its lush forests, or even visit Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Where to stay:

Brovad Sands Lodge: Comfortable cottages that are eco-friendly and offer a fantastic view of Lake Victoria.

Ssese Habitat Resort: A relaxing resort with cozy cottages plus an infinity pool for when you want to take a break from swimming in freshwater lakes.

Murchison Falls National Park – The Nile’s Wild Side

For those who have never seen a waterfall before, Murchison Falls is definitely something they should see first. The falls sit on the Victoria Nile which is 45 meters high and splits into two after dropping down a narrow gorge — creating what is known as Murchison Falls.

The park is also home to lots of wildlife including elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalos, hippos, Nile crocodiles and many others.

And there’s no better way to experience all this beauty than by going on a game drive or boat cruise — both activities are available here.

Where to stay:

Baker’s Lodge: A luxurious lodge that offers a breathtaking view of The Nile, and many other activities like game drives and fishing.

Chobe Safari Lodge: A classic safari lodge that has spacious rooms with air conditioning plus easy access to the park’s best attractions.

Queen Elizabeth National Park – Savannas, Lakes, and Beaches

This national park is the most popular one in Uganda. From savannas to lakes and even beaches — it has everything you need. It’s home to more than 95 mammal species and 600 bird species — making it heaven for animal lovers.

Embark on your adventure with a game drive through the northern part of the park, where you can see elephants, lions and the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha. Don’t miss a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George, where you can see countless hippos, crocodiles and water birds. And for a truly unique experience, head to the Mweya Peninsula – a beautiful piece of land that juts into the Kazinga Channel and has a beautiful sandy beach.

Where to stay:

Mweya Safari Lodge: This iconic lodge on the Mweya Peninsula offers stunning views of the Kazinga Channel. It has comfortable rooms and activities range from game drives to boat cruises.

Ishasha Wilderness Camp: Located in the remote southern sector of the park, this rustic camp gives visitors a true wilderness experience. With comfortable tents and maybe even tree-climbing lions.

Jinja – Nile Adventure Capital

If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping beach vacation, look no further than Jinja – Uganda’s adventure capital and home to the source of the Nile River. This lively town on the riverbank offers many activities for thrill-seekers from white-water rafting to bungee jumping.

Begin by visiting the source of the Nile River. Stand at its early beginnings before it makes its way all across Africa ending in Egypt. If you prefer something more fast-paced then go downstream for some white-water rafting or take it easy with some kayaking. And if you’re really down for something unique try stand-up paddleboarding instead.

Where to stay:

Nile River Camp: Located right next to bank this eco-friendly camp provides comfortable safari tents as well as delicious local cuisine and activities like quad biking or rafting.

Jinja Nile Resort: If luxury is what you want look no further than this hotel built on the banks itself. Have a comfortable stay and enjoy their infinity pool as well as easy access to activities around town.
