Rwanda is a land of magical beauty, famous for its green hills, misty mountains, and legendary creatures such as the mountain gorilla. But while it may be small in size, this country’s rugged terrain often makes exploring by road a bit difficult. That’s where flying safaris come in – offering an exciting and unique way to see the best parts of this amazing destination.

Flying safaris give you an opportunity to look down from above and get an amazing view that few others have seen. These journeys will take you over some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth; from Akagera National Park’s sprawling savannas to Nyungwe National Park’s dense rainforests. By soaring high above Rwanda you’ll be able to access areas that are usually only accessed through long drives or hikes, save yourself time on your trip, and discover natural wonders that no one else has ever laid their eyes on (well…not many people anyways).

Best Destinations For Fly in Safaris Rwanda

Rwanda may be small, but it has big-time wonders and moments that are impossible to forget. Here are some of the ideal spots to include in your aviating safari itinerary:

Volcanoes National Park

When it comes to tourism, Volcanoes National Park is at the top. It’s where you’ll find the iconic mountain gorillas championed by Dian Fossey. Flying over the park will reveal stunning views of the Virunga Mountains, a colossal volcano chain straddling Rwanda, Uganda and Congo.

From above, you’ll witness this park’s dramatic landscapes including its dense forests, deep valleys and misty peaks. You could also see gorillas or other wildlife like golden monkeys or buffalo from up there. When you land at the park’s headquarters, you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to come face-to-face with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat during a gorilla trekking adventure.

Nyungwe National Park

This massive ancient forest is home to approximately 1,000 species of plant life as well as 13 primate species and 300 bird species. A flying safari over Nyungwe will offer an excellent view of this lush green wilderness that’s covered in rolling hills.

Getting a bird’s eye view of this incredible sight is breathtaking as it boasts sparkling waterfalls and deep valley’s throughout. If you’re lucky enough on flight day then you may even spot chimpanzees or other primates from above such as colobus monkeys or baboons. Once landed at the park’s airstrip, take time to explore it on foot by walking along suspended canopy walkways all while tracking chimpanzees through dense underbrushed paths.

Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is called a hidden gem for good reason! It resides away from busy city-life in eastern Rwanda which makes sense since it offers a classic East African safari experience. The park is home to a melting pot of wildlife, including the Big Five (lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalo).

From up high in the sky you’ll have stunning views of vast savannas and rolling hills but that’s not all. You’ll also fly over shimmering lakes and papyrus swamps where some animals reside. There’s also the potential to spot herds of elephants or buffalo from above which gives an even better sense of how large this park really is. Once landed at the airstrip you’ll finally have your chance to explore the park by game drive, boat cruise or walking safari.

Lake Kivu

This lake is one of Africa’s Great Lakes that stretch across Rwanda and Congo. Lake Kivu is known for its deep blue waters, sandy beaches and lush green hills so you already know it’s beautiful. Flying over it will give you a unique perspective on this region as you’ll soar over picturesque fishing villages, terraced farms and misty islands along the way.

While you’re soaring through the sky, you’ll see Lake Kivu’s mind-blowing colors and patterns. From above, its depths are a deep blue while its shores are a vibrant green. With luck, you might even spot schools of colorful cichlid fish or flocks of migratory birds. Once you land at one of its charming lakeside towns like Gisenyi or Cyangugu, you can relax on the beach, take a boat cruise, or explore the local markets and cultural sites.

Kigali City

Even though it’s not a traditional safari destination, Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali is worth visiting on your flying safari itinerary. The city has clean streets, friendly people, modern amenities as well as poignant history and vibrant cultural scene. As you fly over Kigali City on your flying safari you’ll get to experience this busy metropolis in an entirely new way that most don’t get to see. You will get to enjoy views of the green hills dotted with buildings large and small. You’ll appreciate the stunning topography from up high including the cities endless hills and valleys stretching out to the horizon maybe even spotting some landmarks such as the Kigali Convention Centre or the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Once you land at Kigali International Airport — which we highly recommend doing — go ahead and embark on a foot tour through this busy city so you don’t miss anything!
