Uganda, which is often referred to as the “Pearl of Africa,” is a small country filled with wonder, and any photographer will wax poetic about it. This little paradise has incredibly distinguishable landscapes that are lush enough to inspire anybody’s imagination. And don’t get me started on the wildlife! Unique animals roam the land and you will be captivated by their diversity. The culture here is also something else. It’s so far removed from many other places in the world that just snapping a picture of it will feel like an incredible privilege.
From the misty mountains of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the vast savannas of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda provides endless opportunities to capture breathtaking images that will last a lifetime.

The Best Spots for Photography Safaris in Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A haven for gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to nearly half of the world’s surviving mountain gorillas. If you want to snap these magnificent primates in their natural habitat, this should definitely be on your list. And while you’re there, take the opportunity to capture the park’s abundance of wildlife and landscapes.

The park’s foggy forests make for a dramatic backdrop. Not only do they create an air of mystique and magic, but as sunlight breaks through them, it’ll shine through their eyes. Can you imagine that shot? Trust us — it’s unforgettable.

In addition to gorillas, Bwindi is also home to other primates like chimpanzees and monkeys. It has exceptional birdlife too: over 350 species! Many of which can only be found in Albertine Rift.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

The most popular safari destination in Uganda (and for good reason), Queen Elizabeth National Park is just begging to be captured on camera. Think about all those iconic animals: lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo… You’ve got plenty of chances here!

And don’t think wildlife is all this place has going on. Different areas call for different backgrounds too! So you won’t get bored if you spend a lot of time here.

If you’re looking for something truly unique though, check out Ishasha sector. That’s where tree-climbing lions lounge around fig trees!

Like we said before though… Wildlife isn’t everything that makes Queen Elizabeth stand out. Over 600 species have been recorded there — making it a dream come true for bird photographers.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park is an ape-filled rainforest. It’s got the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda, so you’ll definitely want to snap a few pictures of them goofing around. Lucky for you (and for them), their favorite place to monkey around is in the treetops. Which means plenty of opportunity for great shots. But if you can’t get enough of apes, don’t stress — it’s not only chimps that dwell here. Kibale has 12 other species too.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s biggest protected area, Murchison Falls National Park holds a ton of different habitats. So when you visit here on your photography safari, prepare yourself for all sorts of environments: from grasslands to forests and wetlands.

The main attraction here though? The falls themselves — where the Victoria Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge and plummets into the river below.

A safari photography trip to Murchison guarantees various wildlife— be it the large population of elephants, giraffes and buffalo or its unique species like the Rothschild’s giraffe and the Shoebill stork. However, the park’s boat cruise to the base of the falls is still worth mentioning giving you stunning views of waterfalls and a chance to photograph hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds up close.

When it comes to landscape and scenic photography, Murchison is also an excellent destination with its rolling hills, rocky outcrops and The Nile River that winds through the park dramatically. If you’re an early bird or a night owl game drives offer chances to capture stunning scenery in golden light at dawn and dusk.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is located in northeast Uganda bordering South Sudan and Kenya which makes it quite remote. It features rugged, semi-arid landscapes alongside unique wildlife making it any photographers dream location.

With several species found nowhere else in Uganda including cheetahs, bat-eared foxes and ostriches Kidepo is definitely one special place. However large herds of buffalo roam around as well as zebras— elephants are no exception along with various predators like lions leopards spotted hyenas.

Should I mention that most iconic feature—the Narus Valley? Yeah I think so. This lush oasis in the heart of savannas attracts huge concentration s of wildlife particularly during dry season. Honestly this valley provides one helluva backdrop for wildlife photography— with towering sausage trees alongside rocky outcrops there is no doubt your photos will look stunning if taken at sunrise or sunset.
